Amongst the busy days of fall’s approach, it can sometimes feel like our magic takes a back seat to the more immediate mundane tasks at hand. While it’s perfectly normal to have periods of life where our practices get less focus, consistency is still important. So the goal isn’t to shoot for elaborate spells or rituals when you’re already trying to find time to clean your house and restock your fridge. It’s often more productive and manageable to find small ways to associate everyday tasks with tiny magical acts. Keep it flexible. Even if it’s not the same things every day, you can aim for one to three things each day that remind you that you and your hectic life are full of magic.
In my experience, one of the easiest things to do to maintain a magical practice is breathwork. It’s so versatile and always accessible. Even if you find the space to take one or two deep breaths in line at the grocery store or stuck in traffic, that’s a win. Use your shower time as a moment of gratitude or an energy cleanse. Even if you have to rush, take a second to be grateful for the chance to be refreshed. One of my favorite ways to work magic in my day is by taking a moment of gratitude for the food and drinks I consume. Even if it’s a granola bar scarfed down while rushing down the stairs because the bus is already outside, I either think or whisper “Thanks!” One of the most sacred moments of every day is the time I take to make coffee for myself and my partner. While I fill the reservoir, I give thanks for water. As I fill the filter, I give thanks for the earth. As I listen to the coffee maker start heating the water, I thank fire. And as I sit with my cup, I enjoy the comforting warmth and rising steam and thank air. Even if I have to rush through this practice, I’ll give a quick “thanks” before my first sip. If you’re feeling especially low energy, you could wear a color that you’ve associated with something you’d like to bring into your day. Like blue for clear communication or green for compassion and empathy for example.
There are so many little ways you can remind yourself of your magic and stay connected to your practice without feeling like you have to set aside time you may not have regularly for complicated spells or long rituals. Those are fantastic when you have time, but if that’s once a month, tiny acts of reconnection can carry you between your larger works.
